This is an extremely remote part of the planet, far from modern infrastructure and pollution. Rivers are clean and the air is clear.

Placing hives here among the communities and families that live in the remote stretches of the Miombo Woodlands mean that the honey produced is some of the purest you will find anywhere on the planet. Getting there can be a challenge, but a harvest of flawless raw honey is its own reward.

The centre of our operation in the region is in Kasempa in the North-Western Province of Zambia. Hives are produced in Ndola, close to government pine plantations, while a packing plant is being built in Livingstone.

Rough roads and rickety bridges are part of the landscape.

Roads disappear and we end up following cattle tracks through the veld. In the rainy season we get bogged down and have to dig vehicles out. Sleeping out in the wilderness waiting for another truck to come along and help, is part of any journey here. Last year, in the rains, the bridge at Kakoma was washed away. The detour to cross the river took seven hours. Luckily, that bridge is back in service – until it rains again.

The sub-tropical rains that feed the lush vegetation where the bees are at work are always welcome. They also make getting to our community beekeepers quite an adventure. That’s why we call our team on the ground ‘intrepid’.

Tracks in this wild part of Africa are often terrible or non-existent. The Musanya team might be forced to camp out until a passing vehicle can help dig them out.
